The Green Team of Jordan Health Aid Society International (JHASi) held its weekly meeting to discuss the impact of climate change on Jordan’s healthcare sector. The team explored different scenarios of local or global emergencies that could disrupt the healthcare system, aiming to develop effective response plans.

As a leading organization in studying the effects of climate change on health, JHASi seeks to provide recommendations to the National Committee and the Ministry of Health. These proposals focus on possible emergency scenarios that may partially or completely disrupt the local healthcare system, along with response strategies. The organization draws on international experiences to support national efforts led by the Ministry of Health.

The team highlighted that natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, extreme heat, and earthquakes can weaken any country’s healthcare system. They emphasized the importance of building a resilient health sector capable of handling large-scale emergencies. They also stressed the need for greater investment in this area and securing international support to strengthen Jordan’s healthcare system.

Among the scenarios discussed, the team addressed the risks of losing communication or access to healthcare facilities due to blocked roads, supply chain disruptions, or communication network failures. They also explored the role of technology in overcoming these challenges, such as using helicopters or drones—an area where Jordan has already started local manufacturing.

To enhance the resilience of healthcare centers, the team recommended hiring medical staff from the same areas where health centers are located to ensure continuity of service during crises. They also suggested creating a network of retired healthcare professionals from those regions, connecting them with the system as an emergency response force.

Additionally, the team proposed shifting to a decentralized supply model for remote health centers, increasing the capacity of local supply warehouses, and investing in clean energy solutions. Since supply chains consume a significant portion of the health system’s energy, improving efficiency in this area is key to strengthening resilience.

These efforts align with JHASi’s commitment to supporting Jordan’s national healthcare system and enhancing its ability to tackle climate-related challenges. In collaboration with relevant authorities, the organization aims to ensure the continuity of healthcare services and save lives in times of crisis.
